MONROE, Conn. — Fawn Hollow Elementary School started its day with a Veterans Day Breakfast for veterans and their families Tuesday morning, decorating the cafeteria in red, white and blue to show their gratitude and pride for the men and women who bravely serve.
Many of the honored guests arrived proudly wearing their uniforms, according to Principal Leigh Metcalf Ances.
Teacher Jenna Rice, a military spouse, invited each student to introduce their veteran by sharing their name, rank and branch of service.
“To close the breakfast, we show a heartfelt slideshow honoring all Fawn Hollow veterans — those present at the event as well as those unable to attend,” Ances said. “Staff members and students from the Student Leadership Team help serve, greet families, and ensure everything runs smoothly.”
Once school began, the entire Fawn Hollow community gathered at the flagpole outside to recite the Pledge of Allegiance together. Second graders performed patriotic songs, and fifth graders shared facts about the significance of Veterans Day and why we take time to recognize it each year.
Following the ceremony, the visiting veterans were invited into classrooms to speak with students about their experiences and the meaning of service. Students also wrote letters of thanks to express their appreciation.
During social studies, students read informational texts and reflected on what they’ve learned about honor, courage and community.
“Veterans Day at Fawn Hollow is a proud tradition that gives us the opportunity to bring our students, staff and families together to celebrate and thank those who have served our country,” Ances said.
