Masuk Unified Sports team kicks-off its soccer season

MONROE, CT — Unified Sports at Masuk High School is an inclusive program that unites Special Olympics athletes and partners as teammates for training and competition.

The program is led by Cindy Boucard and Donald Casey Jr., who are coaching 30 students on the fall Unified Sports team.

Each practice begins with a team meeting. Drills are demonstrated and practiced in small groups consisting of athletes and partners.

Newly acquired skills are applied to game-like situations during a scrimmage. The team concludes practice with a team cheer: “One two three, Go Panthers!”

Safety is top priority during each practice, according to Head Coach Donald Casey Jr.

“We are so proud of every athlete and partner on our team,” he said. “Students are learning new skills, building friendships, working together as a team, and having fun!”

Recently, the team participated in a friendly Tug of War contest against fellow students during the school’s Spirit Week pep rally.

The Panthers Unified Sports Team will travel to Newtown Youth Academy on Oct. 22 for a high school soccer tournament starting at 3:15 p.m.
