Masuk girls golf team had best season in program history

Masuk's golf team earned the runner-up plaque at the state championship match.

MONROE, CT — It was a season to remember for the Masuk High girls golf team. The Panthers not only captured the South-West Conference Championship, but went unbeaten at 16-0 before taking a runner-up finish in the Division II State Championship behind only Berlin.

“This was the best golf season Masuk has had, boys or girls, in the history of Masuk High School,” Coach Bob Pagel said. “The team had a focus on competing for the state championship from day one. They understood they could challenge the powerhouse of Berlin. We did all we could do, but Berlin played very well in the abysmal weather conditions.”

Poor weather conditions were a factor throughout the spring, but as hard as opponents and rain alike tried to slow the Panthers neither could stop Masuk on the greens and fairways.

“We have to thank everyone at the Chris Bargas Golf Course at Whitney Farms for being very generous, allowing the team to use the course in any condition. We practiced and played in poor weather when most private courses were closed,” Pagel said.

The Masuk High golfers won the SWC Championship this year.

The coach added that the Panthers thought practicing in poor conditions would give them an advantage if they had to compete in wet weather — and it did.

“The girls played in awful conditions and battled through it. I have to acknowledge all the girls that played in the states, you all showed heart and determination. It was a pleasure to see such dedication,” Pagel said.

The Panthers were not only winners on the course, but off as well.

“My girls are the best people, students and golfers I have been around,” the coach said. “They make coaching a pleasure. We have another shot at it next year with the same group, with the exception of our senior leader Jocelyn Allen. She will be missed for her leadership and dedication to her teammates. We will also be missing two other seniors leaders: Tatiana Fabryk and Alexa Gill.”

All State honorees Adriana Lupo and Alex Cecchino had qualified for the State Open at Mohegan Sun Golf Course on June 13. Abby Yeager and Emma McIntyre are among others, who played a key role in the team’s success this spring and are expected back in the fold next year.
