MONROE, CT — The Memorial Day Weekend’s Newtown Savings Bank Mile Down the Pike road race featured a record-setting course time as three-time participant Jasper McHugh finished in 4:41 Sunday afternoon.
“This is my third time coming here and it’s nice to finally win,” said McHugh, a 13-year-old track and field/cross country runner.
The cool temperatures were welcomed by participants of various ages, including top female and sixth-place finisher Andrea Myers, 42, who came across the finish line in 4:59. She was also the top female last year when heat impacted the participants.
“Much better weather. I was 10 seconds faster than last year,” she said.

Myers added that this is always a fun event, and a unique one in that it is all downhill. The race starts on Monroe Turnpike, just below the rotary, and finishes just before the intersection of Elm Street where the annual parade begins.
“You push yourself in a different way,” Myers said.
The runner-up finisher was Brien Friedman in 4:46, followed by Jeff Kurjiaka in 4:52, Jeff Lupchus in a time of 4:54, Alex Soter in 4:56, Myers, then Kyle Molloy in 5:02, Philip Tisi clocking in at 5:06, Jonathan Ganino in 5:08 and Zachary Tracy in 5:10.
