While interviewing Steve Scinto and Frank Pelligra for my article on The Smithy this week, the owners shared a copy of a menu from the earliest days of their restaurant’s 46-year-history for the fun of comparing it to today’s prices.
A filet mignon dinner at The Smithy is $34, but it was only $5.25 and included salad, breads and coffee when the restaurant started out. Though that was probably a lot of money back then.
You could also buy a baked potato for 35 cents and have spumoni ice cream for dessert for another 50 cents. There was also a choice of the “Tempting Cheese Cake” for 70 cents.
A carafe of wine was one dollar and a glass was 60 cents.
Substitute teacher openings
Monroe public schools is hiring substitute teachers to be on call for $95 a day. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree, though a Teaching Certificate is not required.

Meet Your Legislators
State Rep. JP Sredzinski, R-112, and State Sen. Kevin Kelly, R-21, invite constituents to meet them in Monroe on Tuesday, Sept. 3 to discuss new laws that recently went into effect, as well as other state issues impacting local residents.
The event will be in room 204 of Monroe Town Hall, 7 Fan Hill Road, from 6 to 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Washington 19 Lodge Computer Award
Dakota Northrop, a graduate of Masuk High School’s Class of 2019, was the recipient of this year’s Washington 19 Lodge Computer Award.
Stepney Fire’s Lobster Clambake is Saturday
Stepney Volunteer Fire Department’s 18th annual Lobster Clambake will be held this Saturday at Stepney Firehouse No. 1, 88 Main St., from 3 to 9 p.m. Visitors can buy takeout meals or eat together at tables inside and outdoors.
A $27 donation pays for a lobster or steak meal, both with corn on the cob, red potatoes, a dinner roll and a beverage. Families can also buy an $8 kids meal, which includes a choice of a hamburger or a hot dog with chips and a drink.
Steamed clams or clams on a half-shell will be available for purchase, along with home baked desserts made by the Stepney Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary. Adult drinks, coffee, tea and soda will also be sold.

A Masuk Class Reunion
Masuk High School’s Class of ’89 is planning a reunion in the Fairchild Room of Vazzy’s 19th Hole on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Monroe Chamber’s Scholarship Golf Tournament
The Monroe Chamber of Commerce’s annual Scholarship Golf Tournament will be played at Whitney Farms Golf Course on Oct. 7. The event is sponsored by Union Savings Bank.
The scholarships are presented to Masuk High School seniors in honor of former Chamber president John Dry during the Chamber’s annual dinner and business meeting.

The Chamber is offering 10 sponsorship opportunities for the golf tournament and needs teams to register to play. Those wishing to register as a single will be assigned to a short team.
Registration is at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast and warm ups on the driving range. At 9 a.m. there will be a scramble format and shot gun start. Carts are provided and a refreshment cart will roam the course. Lunch, awards, prizes and raffles are at 1 p.m.
