Monroe Police: One thief identified, while trying to bail out another

MONROE, CT — A Bridgeport woman, who tried to pay the bond of a suspect in police custody for allegedly stealing bottles of alcohol from JB Wines & Spirits, 150 Main St., on Dec. 10 was recognized by detectives as a suspect in the same crime, which took place on Nov. 18.

That day, Monroe police detectives took down the woman’s information, before applying for a warrant for her arrest. The 44-year-old city woman turned herself in at the police station on Thursday.

She was charged with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny and released on $500 court set bond for a Jan. 31 court date.

On Nov. 18, an employee of JB Wines & Spirits told police a man and two women walked into the store. The two women walked up to the employee asking to use his phone, because they said theirs was dead, according to the report.

While this was happening, police said the man walked to the back of the store.

The trio left the store without buying anything, but the employee later noticed two bottles of tequila and one bottle of cognac, with a total value of around $167, were missing. Police said video surveillance footage showed the man hiding the bottles in his clothing.

While working with other area police departments, Monroe police identified the suspects.

The city man, age 46, was arrested in Bridgeport on Dec. 10 and charged with sixth-degree larceny and held on $1,000 bond, before being taken to court the next day.

Detectives are still working to track down the second woman.

Evading and a DUI

Monroe police officers trying to track down a driver, who evaded the scene of an accident in the 500-block of Pepper Street Jan. 14, learned he was later arrested in Newtown for DUI.

At approximately 8:38 a.m., the owner of a warehouse on Pepper Street told officers he noticed damage to a utility pole at the end of his driveway and saw vehicle debris scattered around it. Checking his security cameras, he saw a vehicle hit the pole and drive off the previous night.

That same night, Newtown police pulled over a 2019 Lexis driven by a 37-year-old Bethel man in their town and charged him with DUI. They later learned about the accident in Monroe and the Lexis had damage consistent with the crash, so they called Monroe police about it, according to the report.

Monroe police are still investigating the evading in their town.

Credit Card fraud

A 39-year-old Monroe woman reported a total of $1,775 worth of fraudulent charges on her Best Buy credit card Jan. 21. Though the card was still in her possession, someone made the transactions in New York State, according to police.

On Jan. 21, she told police she received a text alert from Best Buy informing her that her membership elapsed. She thought this was odd, because she hasn’t used that credit card in a long time, police said.

The Monroe Police Detective Division is looking into the matter.

Evading charge

A 71-year-old Hattertown Road man was issued a misdemeanor summons for evading responsibility and failure to maintain his lane after being involved in a two-vehicle-accident on his street late Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 4:37 p.m., police said the driver tried to pass a truck parked in his lane before his blue 2015 Ford F-250 struck a gray 2014 Nissan Juke heading in the opposite direction.

Police said the driver of the Nissan, a 27-year-old Blanket Meadow Road man, told officers he pulled up onto the grass to avoid a collision with the Ford, but it struck his front, driver’s side bumper.

The driver of the Ford allegedly drove off, before being tracked down by officers.

Police said both men were not injured and neither vehicle had to be towed.

The Hattertown Road man was released on a promise to appear in court on Feb. 11.

Silverado hits tree

A 19-year-old Bridgeport man escaped injury after losing control of his 2020 Chevy Silverado amid a heavy snowstorm on Jan. 19, crossing over the opposite lane of traffic on Main Street (Route 25), striking a curb, then going off the road and hitting a tree head on.

Police said the crash occurred around 7:33 p.m. when the driver was heading south, about 150 feet from Northbrook Condominiums.

He admitted to having no driver’s license, according to police. In addition to that infraction, he was also cited for failure to drive in the proper lane and his vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.
