MONROE, CT — Basketball games are commonly won in the final quarter, if not the waning minutes … or seconds. For Masuk High’s girls basketball team the first quarter was the difference-maker in its 60-43 win over visiting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on Thursday.
The Panthers outscored Kolbe 18-6 in the opening eight minutes. Both teams put up 19 in the second quarter, leaving Masuk on top 37-25 at the break. Masuk extended its lead to 15 heading into the fourth.
The Panthers were led by Bailey Bajda with 24 points, including an 8-for-12 performance from the free throw line. Maddie Farrer scored 10, Grace Sheppard nine, Abby Troesser had eight and Emma Troesser five. Julia Hourigan added a 3-pointer and Peyton Webb tacked on a free throw.
Masuk improved to 6-2 overall and will participate in the Hoophall Invitational in Springfield, Mass., this weekend beginning with a contest against Springfield International on Saturday.
