Seventh graders enrolled in Jockey Hollow’s STEM Academy took a trip to Meigs Point Nature Center in Hammonasset with their science class in early October.
The nature center, which is part of the Connecticut state park system, is operated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection with the expressed purpose of educating people about environmental preservation.
On their trip, students learned more about ecosystems and how they operate, and explored the beaches of Hammonasset, while studying rocks and shells, and searching for crabs and other wildlife.
After their adventures, they relaxed and ate lunch at a pavilion with their teachers.
Students who were interviewed said they found the trip to be an engaging, hands-on experience. They also enjoyed how informative the guides were and the time spent outdoors.
“The sandy beach was beautiful,” said Nathan Diaz, a student who went on the trip.
“It was really fun to see all the shells and animals,” Pia Montes-Santorelli, another student, said of the trip.
