BRIDGEPORT, CT — Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox, the Democratic candidate for Connecticut’s 22nd Senatorial District seat, led her opponent, Republican, Chris Carrena, 51 to 47 percent late Tuesday night. Independent Party candidate Robert Halstead was a distant third.
During a watch party at Crossroads Pizza on Main Street, Gadkar-Wilcox’s campaign expressed confidence in a victory to cheering supporters, but with three precincts in Bridgeport and early voting and absentee ballots yet to be counted, they decided to call it a night.
The final outcome should be decided later today.
Before leaving the restaurant late Tuesday night, Gadkar-Wilcox thanked her campaign team for all of their hard work.
“I love the district, the whole 22nd District and I’m very much looking forward to representing Bridgeport, Trumbull and Monroe as the next state senator in the 22nd District once we get those votes in,” she said to loud cheers.
But the race isn’t over yet. Carrena, who won handily in Monroe, has run a strong campaign.
Carrena and Gadkar-Wilcox, who are both Trumbull residents with fathers who emigrated to the United States, have shown respect for each other while running clean campaigns.
“May the best man or woman win,” Carrena said with a smile when the two political opponents crossed paths at Tashua School in Trumbull earlier in the day Tuesday.
Though he is running to win, the Republican appeared to be positive no matter what the outcome will be.
“I’m honored to be the Republican candidate for this district,” Carrena said. “I made a lot of friends and relationships along the way. At the end of the day, I gave it my all.”
