MONROE, CT — Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel and town police officers often respond to calls that can traumatize young children. But now they have something to cheer them up, thanks to the Monroe Senior Center Knit and Crochet Group’s donation of 30 handmade teddy bears.
“They can give a bear to a child who has been in an accident,” said Judy DiMartino, who had approached the Knit and Crochet Group’s leader Laverne Dillon with the idea. “It will make them feel more comfortable and not so scared. They could cuddle with it and feel safe. It’s a nice thing to do and we are happy to do it.”
Lisa Pane, the Monroe EMS administrator, said, “donations like this are always appreciated and very helpful in calming a stressful situation. The bears will be given to injured or sick children.”
Monroe Police Detective Stacy Cascante also welcomed the donation. “The bears provide comfort if there are children on a call,” she said.
The majority of the bears were knitted or crocheted by Marie Lee, Laverne Dillon and Alice Fiorello.
Members of the Monroe Senior Center Knit and Crochet Group will be at the Monroe Farmers’ Market on Friday, Sept. 27, with bears and many other knitted and crocheted items for sale.
