MONROE, CT — Four Democrats will duke it out in a primary with the party nomination to run for Connecticut’s 22nd Senatorial District on the line, following the retirement of longtime legislator Marilyn Moore. The winner will face Chris Carrena, the Republican endorsed candidate, in November.
The 22nd District includes Trumbull and sections of Monroe and Bridgeport. Democrats vying for their party’s nomination candidates are Scott Burns, Bill Finch, Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox and Tyler Mack.
Meanwhile, Republicans Gerry Smith and Matthew M. Cory are seeking their party’s nomination to challenge incumbent U.S. Sen. Christopher Murphy for the Democrat’s seat.
The GOP also has a two-way-race between Bob MacGuffie and Michael Goldstein for the right to run against U.S. Rep. Jim Himes in the 4th Congressional District.
Monroe will host the Democratic and Republican primaries on Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations:
Democratic Primary: District 2 and 3 voters only for State Senate District #22:
- District 2: Stepney Elementary School, 180 Old Newtown Road, use main entrance
- District 3: Monroe Elementary School, 375 Monroe Turnpike, use main entrance
Republican Primary: All districts (1, 2, 3 and 4) U.S. Senator and Representative in Congress District No. 4:
District 1: Fawn Hollow Elementary School, 345 Fan Hill Road, use main entrance
District 2: Stepney Elementary School, 180 Old Newtown Road, use main entrance
District 3: Monroe Elementary School, 375 Monroe Turnpike, use main entrance
District 4: Masuk High School, 1014 Monroe Turnpike, use main entrance

Early voting
A new thing this primary season is early voting for the primaries, which will be available at Monroe Town Hall, 7 Fan Hill Road, from Aug. 5 through 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Aug. 6 and 8 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The deadline for unaffiliated voters who want to vote during the early voting period to enroll in a party is by noon on Aug. 2.
Those not yet registered in Monroe, who want to vote during the early voting period before the Primary Election, should file their voter registration application (for a party holding a primary) with Monroe’s registrars of voters by noon on the business day before the day they want to vote.
The deadline for registering in person with the registrars of voters or town clerk to vote in a primary on Aug. 13 is by noon on Aug. 12.
Those planning to register to vote in person, may do so at the Registrar of Voters’ Office at Monroe Town Hall, 7 Fan Hill Road, until noon on Monday, Aug. 12. Bring I.D. and proof of residence.
There will be no Same Day Registration for these primaries.
