MONROE, CT — Police were called to the same Wells Road residence for three complaints over the course of two days, leading to two arrests for assault on July 8 and 9.
Officers were called to the house at 6:19 p.m. on July 8, when a man allegedly came home and punched another several times. Police said the victim, who is 45, was heavily intoxicated and had obvious injuries to his face. He was evaluated by Monroe Emergency Medical Service personnel at the scene.
The victim’s wife witnessed the incident and told officers the other man hit her husband.
The other resident, a 51-year-old man, who claimed it was self defense, was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct. Because the married couple had an infant present, the man was also charged with risk of injury to a minor.
He was released on $1,500 bond for a July 15 court date.
Officers were called back to the home at 7:45 p.m., when the woman told police the arrestee’s brother allegedly threatened she and her husband.
He allegedly called and told her they should drop the charges against his brother or she “will know what will happen.” She hung up and felt threatened, according to the report.
Police contacted the brother, who was visiting a friend across the street from the house on Wells Road, and he denied making any threats. Officers warned him and the woman not to have contact with each other and they agreed.
Then the woman called police again at 12:47 a.m. on July 9 to report that she was on her way to bed when she and her husband got into an argument over their child and he allegedly punched her around her left eye when she was holding the baby.
Officers observed swelling and slight bruising in area of the woman’s eye. Her husband, who was still drunk, was unable to explain what happened due to his level of intoxication, according to police.
He was charged with risk of injury to a child and third degree assault. He was held on $1,000 bond and taken to court later that morning.
Too good to be true
A 31-year-old Monroe woman gave a scammer sensitive financial information and was about to send Apple gift cards when a call from a friend saved her from the transaction, according to a police complaint made on July 6.
Police said the woman received a Facebook message from someone posing as a co-worker she was friends with, who asked if she ever heard about a Department of Heath and Human Services grant. After hearing an explanation about it, she received a link to an agent to process a claim.
During the interaction, police said the victim gave the representative sensitive demographic information, including her phone number, occupation and a photo of her W-2. They discussed grant options and the representative told her to buy three Apple gift cards and send a photo of the cards to her.
While she was in the process of purchasing the gift cards, police said her real friend called her and, when asked about the grant, had no idea what she was talking about, police said, adding the woman realized she was being scammed.
Police said she did not sent any money and was advised to contact the Social Security Administration, the major credit agencies and to monitor her financial accounts for suspicious activity.
“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” Monroe Police Lt. Kevin McKellick said. “Check with friends before making purchases online. No reputable person or company would accept payment in Apple gift cards.”
Police recover stolen Traverse
A black 2021 Chevrolet Traverse was reported stolen from Stony Brook Drive on July 5, after the owner forgot to lock the doors after parking for an Independence Day party, according to police, who said she believes a spare key was inside her vehicle.
Police said the victim noticed the Chevy was missing around 3:17 a.m. It was later recovered in New Haven at 6 p.m. on July 5 and processed for evidence by detectives.
Another person who parked a vehicle on Stony Brook Drive told police the car was entered and rummaged through, though nothing was missing.
