Hot chocolate and cider, Christmas carols, candy canes and of course a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus were all part of the Monroe Women’s Club’s 20th Annual Tree Lighting on Saturday.
The event took place on and around the gazebo at the Town Hall Green on a warm-for-the-season night. It brought together girls, boys, moms and dads to get into the holiday spirit.
The Harmony on the Sound Chorus, as well as musicians from the Masuk High choir, band and strings all performed.
“I think we were fortunate with the weather tonight. The music sounds amazing. Monroe Women’s Club and Monroe Social helped make the event more fun for the kids,” said Samantha McGoldrick, who attended along with her husband Aaron and their daughters, Adeline and Emelia.
“I just like doing it every year — this is what it’s all about. I’m excited to be a part of the community and to be together with the Women’s Club,” said Constantin Crama, owner of Monroe Social, who served cups of hot chocolate while his wife, Catalina, passed out cups of hot cider, and their son, Jonathan, also helped out.
Each year, Crama and company pour some 300 to 400 cups of hot beverages.
At the table next to the Crama family were members of the Women’s Club who offered Dunkin’ Donuts and other treats, along with bells and beaded necklaces.
“It’s a great way to start the season. Everyone’s in a good mood,” said Women’s Club Co-President Mary Christian-Hein.
Once the tree, donated by Jones Tree Farm, was lit, emcee John Buck, husband of Women’s Club Co-President Adele Buck, introduced Santa and Mrs. Claus after they arrived in style via a Monroe Volunteer Fire truck.
Families lined up for photos of children with Santa and Mrs. Claus, then headed home to close the book on yet another festive tree lighting ceremony in town.
