MONROE, CT — Two Lynn Drive residents evacuated their home safely during a laundry room fire Sunday night, before firefighters quickly extinguished it. However, the dryer and a back wall sustained damage and there was a significant smoke condition throughout the house.
Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated the residents for smoke inhalation, but they did not require hospitalization, according to a post on the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department No. 1 Inc. Facebook page.
The occupants are staying with relatives, while the smoke damage is addressed, firefighters said.
The 911 call came in around 7:30 p.m. and after firefighters from Stepney, Stevenson and Monroe extinguished the fire, they vented smoke from the house.
DUI on Wheeler
A call about a suspicious person driving a vehicle with its lights flashing, getting out and knocking on people’s doors on Gerardo Drive Friday night led to a DUI arrest.
Police officers responding to a complaint, just after 8 p.m., found a 2013 Nissan Rogue on Beaver Circle stopped at stop sign at the intersection with Wheeler Road.
Officers got behind the vehicle and turned on their overhead lights, but the driver allegedly failed to obey the signal and turned left onto Wheeler Road, before pulling over in the 200-block of the street, police said.
The driver, a 63-year-old Monroe woman, told officers she was looking for a cat that ran away two days ago.
Officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. She said she had one glass of wine with dinner at her home earlier, but when she spoke she kept slurring her words, asking officers to repeat things and asking why they were there, according to the report.
Police said her eyes were bloodshot and her eyelids were droopy, adding 12 empty nip bottles of various alcoholic beverages could be seen inside her vehicle.
Field sobriety tests were not performed to standard, leading to her arrest for DUI, police said, adding she refused to participate in breathalyzer tests at police headquarters.
She was released after posting 10 percent of $500 bond for a Dec. 11 court date.
Crash with a rollover
Two drivers escaped serious injuries following a head-on-crash on Fan Hill Road, in the area of Old Fawn Hill Road, late Saturday night.
Around 11:18 p.m., police said a 19-year-old Monroe man drove a white 2002 Cadillac Escalade too fast while heading north on Fan Hill, lost control of his vehicle on a right hand turn, crossed over the double yellow line and hit a gray 2016 Toyota Camry heading south.
After the collision, police said the Escalade continued on, going off the road to the right, then into a ditch, striking a tree and rolling over, police said.
The Monroe man reportedly told officers he was traveling north on Fan Hill and only remembers his vehicle sliding, leaving the roadway, then spinning out of control. He was evaluated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel, but refused a trip to a hospital, police said.
The driver of the Camry, a 61-year-old Bridgeport woman, had a visible cut on her forehead and was evaluated by EMS, but also refused a trip to the hospital, according to the report.
Both vehicles were towed.
The Monroe man was issued an infraction for driving too fast for conditions and failure to keep right on a curve or a hill.
Fraudulent Verizon account
A 33-year-old Monroe man told officers someone fraudulently opened a Verizon Wireless account under his name, according to a complaint filed Friday.
Verizon would not give the victim any more information, police said, adding he filed a police report to allow the company’s fraud department to move forward with its investigation.
Police said the Monroe man did not suffer a financial loss and is monitoring his accounts for any suspicious activity.
