Monroe First Foundation donates $3,000 to Masuk Post Prom

Masuk PTC still needs volunteers for the event

First Selectman Ken Kellogg and his Monroe First Foundation present a $3,000 check for the Post Prom to the Masuk Parent-Teacher Club, Principal Steve Swensen and members of Masuk's student government during a ceremony at the school Monday evening.

MONROE, CT — Every year, Masuk High School juniors and seniors attending their prom night can come to their school for hours of food, music and fun activities together during a Post Pom party organized by the Masuk Parent-Teacher Club (PTC), which is chaperoned by volunteers.

“This is one of the important things we do as a community, to have safe, fun places for our juniors and seniors to go to after the prom,” First Selectman Ken Kellogg said.

On Monday evening, Kellogg’s Monroe First Foundation donated $3,000 from the proceeds of its annual charity golf tournament to the PTC to be used for the Masuk Post Prom.

“It’s so generous of Ken and his foundation to donate every year to the Post Prom,” Masuk Principal Steve Swensen said. “That will go a long way for providing students with entertainment and food in a safe environment after the prom.”

First Selectman Ken Kellogg speaks during the check presentation ceremony. With him, from left, is Monroe First Foundation board members Jonathan Stone, Mary Kellogg and Karen Cardi.

Kellogg and members of the Monroe First Foundation board, including his wife Mary, Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman Jonathan Stone and Karen Cardi, who Kellogg said was the “heart and soul” of the Masuk Post Prom for many years, attended a check presentation ceremony in the main lobby of the high school.

Town Attorney Frank Lieto, who is also on the board, could not make it.

Jennifer Unger, who is co-president of the Masuk PTC with Tammy Julian, attended the ceremony with Co-Vice President Sue DeGeorge and Co-Treasurer Kirsten Londono.

The prom is scheduled for May 31 and the Post Prom will be held at Masuk right after that.

Unger said the Masuk PTC still needs volunteers to help set up this year’s Post Prom — which always has a surprise theme for students, to clean up and to chaperone the event. Those wishing to help can send an email to [email protected].

The Post Prom has a bounce house, photo booths and students can play basketball, just to name a few of the many activities the event has to offer. One year included laser tag.

Among the seniors serving on Masuk’s student government attending Monday’s ceremony were Class President Ellie DeGeorge, Sawyer Carlson, Ben Londono, Anish Sharma, Bhuvan Hospet, Eric Unger and Killian Irish-Donini.

“Post Prom is incredibly important to us, to this community,” Kellogg said. Looking at the students, he added, “it’s obviously important to you guys as well, because you’re here to support it. I want to thank you. I want to thank the adults that are part of PTC that put in so much time and effort. Thanks Mr. Swensen for being here tonight as well. We are proud to present to the Post Prom $3,000 towards your next Post Prom event.”
