Monroe Police Reports: DUI on an ATV

MONROE, CT — A 46-year-old Monroe man was charged with DUI Friday after officers responded to a complaint about an intoxicated person leaving the parking lot of 574 Wines on a blue Yamaha Raptor 90 Friday night.

The ATV traveled north on Route 111 and officers initiated a motor vehicle stop, directing the driver to park in the Monroe firehouse parking lot on Shelton Road.

Police said the driver had bloodshot eyes, the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, was unsteady on his feet and seemed confused. When officers asked his name, he could not provide it, according to the report.

Officers identified him from his driver’s license, which was in his pocket, police said.

He was arrested and brought to police headquarters. There was a language barrier, so a Portuguese translator arrived, the report said, but the man refused to participate in field sobriety and breath tests.

He was charged with DUI, operating a motor vehicle under suspension and illegal operation of an ATV on a public road. He was released on 10 percent of a $500 bond and has a June 20 court date.

Stolen tools

A 44-year-old Pepper Street man, who owns a landscaping and masonry business, told police about $3,420 worth of tools were stolen from the unsecured bed of his pickup truck, while it was parked at his home. A homemade wooden tailgate was also taken.

The victim told officers he believes the theft occurred sometime between 7 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Among the stolen tools were cordless saws, table saws, a tool box, a Sawzall, an impact driver and hand tools.

Police said there are no suspects, though the victim believes it was likely someone who had worked for him in the past and knew where the tools were. The case is under investigation.

Cut with a razor

A Birchwood Road woman told police her husband cut her left arm with a razor during an argument in their bathroom early Sunday morning.

A neighbor called police after the victim took her children out of the house and knocked on her door, according to the report.

The husband told officers they argued over personal issues, he went to take a shower and she entered the bathroom and “began flipping out on him,” police said.

He reportedly told officers he tried to calm her down and it did not work, so he picked up a razor in the shower, she tried to grab it from him and cut her arm in the struggle, police said of the husband’s account.

Police said it was a minor cut and the husband claimed he cleaned it out and put a band-aid on it. The wife was taken to the hospital for unrelated medical issues, the report said.

Based on the evidence and accounts, the husband, 41, was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct and released after posting 10 percent of $5,000 bond for a June 12 court date. A protective order was enacted before the court date.

Stolen mailbox

A 55-year-old Highfield Drive woman told police someone stole her mailbox Saturday.

Police said the theft occurred sometime between 5 p.m. on Friday and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, adding there is no surveillance video. The estimated cost to replace the mailbox is $100.

Unemployment fraud

Police responded to two separate complaints from residents who received letters from the Connecticut Department of Labor informing them of requests for unemployment insurance benefits Friday.

Both told police they did not authorize the filings and the Labor Department flagged the requests and put stops on the process. Neither resident lost money, according to the report.

In both cases, the victims, a 41-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, were advised to contact the Social Security Administration, and the three major credit bureaus to freeze their accounts.
