MONROE, CT — Stepney Elementary School’s physical education classes walked around the Stepney loop for 30 minutes each during the annual Walk-A-Thon, held the week of Oct. 10, when all families were welcome to show their support.
The fundraiser exceeded the school’s goal of raising $15,000 to support field trips, cultural arts events, teacher mini-grants and other initiatives that enrich the Stepney School community.
Principal Ashley Furnari praised P.E. teacher Bryan Dias and the Stepney PTO for working together to organize this year’s Walk-A-Thon. On Oct. 21, the entire school completed a final loop to celebrate the success of the event, according to Furnari.
“Our school mascot Sparky joined the event to cheer on the children,” she said. “The positive energy that filled the school loop put smiles on everyone’s faces. This was a perfect conclusion to an amazing community event.”
Students cheered upon hearing their school exceeded its fundraising goal, Furnari said, adding, “they cheered again when they learned that students moved for a grand total of 732.4 miles!”
The principal for a day and the P.E. teacher for a day were announced and one student from each grade was awarded a Fitbit, Furnari said.
“As a school community, they had a fun, exciting and successful two weeks,” she said. “The Walk-A-Thon provided students an opportunity to be active and raise money for their school.”
