Texting scam takes nearly $25,000 from Monroe woman’s bank account

MONROE, CT — A texting scam bilked a local woman out of close to $25,000.

She received a text asking her to open a link. After clicking on it, she received another text thanking her for using Paysend. She never heard of it, according to a complaint made to police on Wednesday.

Police said she checked her bank account and noticed three transactions sending a total of $990 made through Paysend. She also noticed two online transactions made using Domestic Wire Transfer, one for $25 and another for $23,500.

Chase Bank and police are investigating the incident.

Stolen check cashed for over $8,000

A Monroe woman received a notification from her car insurance company saying it dropped her for missing a payment. However, she says she mailed the payment.

When she checked her bank account, she noticed a significant amount of money was missing. It turns out, someone intercepted her $156 check in the mail, changed the amount to $8,480, along with the name of the recipient and cashed it.

The woman reported the fraud to police on Tuesday. Webster Bank opened a fraud investigation into the incident, according to the report.
