Police: Driver arrested for DUI was fully clothed

A woman told police she saw a naked man sitting in a gray Cadillac and honking at other vehicles in the area of Lovers Lane and Elm Street around 12:27 p.m. Thursday.

Police went on to arrest a 40-year-old Kimberly Drive man for DUI, but said he was fully clothed, wearing an unbuttoned red shirt, blue shorts and flip flops.

Officers were told the car was last seen turning onto Far Horizon Drive, then the man was seen outside of his car, closing the trunk, while parked on Cutlers Farm Road. Police said a hypodermic syringe was seen at his feet.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated him at the scene, but while police waited for them, the driver participated in field sobriety tests and did not perform to standard, police said.

He was charged with operating under the influence and released on $500 bond for an Oct. 21 court date.

Car vs. pole

Police believe a health issue may have caused a driver to lose control of his vehicle heading east on Cross Hill Road Monday morning, cross over the west lane, go off the road and hit a storm drain and a utility pole just before the intersection with Millo Drive.

The man was treated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel and taken to Bridgeport Hospital.

Police said the utility pole was severed and a transformer fell to the ground and leaked fluid.

Clean Harbors, a cleaning company was called in for the fluid leak and Frontier and Eversource were contacted to repair the pole.

The crash occurred around 9:40 p.m.

Donuts made on cemetery lawn

Police say someone in a truck or similar type of vehicle did donuts on the lawn of St. John’s Cemetery at 500 Moose Hill Road over two weekends, causing around $2,000 to $5,000 worth of damage.

The caretaker told officers someone caused damage on the weekend of Sept. 27 and 28, but he did not initially report it because he thought it was an isolated incident. But then it happened again on the weekend of Oct. 4 and 6, so he reported both incidents on Thursday, according to police.

Police said there were two sections on the lawn near the tower, not the headstones, with circular and straight furrows made with tires, adding there was 5,000 square feet of damage.

Woman escapes Jeep fire

A local woman driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Bagburn Hill Road got out of the vehicle safely after the engine compartment caught fire at the intersection with Old Zoar Road Thursday night.

Stevenson Fire Chief John Howe, who he was the first to arrive on the scene of the 9:25 p.m. call, said the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.

“We put out the fire, waited for the tow truck to come and helped the woman get her stuff out of the car,” Howe said.

Howe said the driver, identified by police as Ashley Norton, 26, of Barn Hill Road in Monroe, was driving away from the direction of Newtown before the fire, and got out of the Jeep at the stop sign at the intersection with Old Zoar Road.

“She did the right thing and got out of the vehicle,” Howe said.
