Monroe’s Gazebo: Under construction

Ozzie Walter, a painter for Bardil Limani Home Design & Contractor, touches up the Monroe Gazebo's dome with a coat of gold paint Tuesday afternoon.

MONROE, CT — Ozzie Walter stood atop the Monroe Gazebo to spray gold paint on its dome Tuesday afternoon, while contractor Bardil Limani and his son, Rilind, swept inside and around the structure down below.

Bardil Limani sweeps the brick walkway in front of the Monroe Gazebo Tuesday afternoon.

A project to make significant repairs to the gazebo got underway this week. The scope includes replacement of the roof, dome and trim and repairs to the bluestone steps and brick walkway.

The $20,000 project includes a $4,000 contingency. The money comes from the Cornelia H. B. Rogers Memorial Fund, which was established through a donation of around $2,250 made in 1811. It has since grown to over $56,000 in income.

Bardil Limani Home Design & Contractor, a Newtown firm, is doing the work.

“We’re gonna paint the dome, replace the crown molding, install a brand new roof — fully ice and water shielded with new architectural shingles, paint the exterior and fix the bluestone steps,” Limani said. “We’re making good progress so far.”

Limani also showed a damaged section of the brick walkway behind the gazebo. That will be replaced and leveled off, he said.

Through his contracting business, Limani, who used to work in Switzerland, said he has completed projects for Newtown Savings Bank and various high-end designers. He is also a UEFA soccer coach for the Westport Soccer Association and the longtime director of the program.
