Monroe Bulky Waste pickup appointments available in May

MONROE, CT — Spring pickups in the Public Works Department’s Bulky Waste Program are still going on with pickup times available in May. Then the program will resume again in the fall, in September, October and November.

This is a service the town provides at no charge to residents and is for large items that cannot be disposed of in your regular trash. Residents are allowed one pickup only per calendar year.

Pickups are by appointment only and occur on a weekly basis during these months, depending on weather conditions and other conflicts that may arise.

To schedule a pickup, visit the town website at monroect.org. Select “Submit Service Request” and sign in as directed. Under Issue Type, select “Bulky Waste Pickup”. Be sure to enter your email address and “Notification Preference”.

If calling the DPW, 203-452-2814, be precise when leaving your name, address, phone number, email and a list of the items. Notification of the pickup date will be by email or a call back. Note the town’s email response will read: “[email protected]”.

Once your pickup is scheduled, it will be your responsibility to make note of the date. Reminder letters will not be sent.

The DPW asks that items be separated in piles behind the curb in an orderly fashion no more than one week prior to pickup or by 7 a.m. on the day of pickup. Items must be easily accessible to the town equipment and personnel.

Acceptable items: Furniture, sofas, chairs, refrigerators (doors removed), rugs, rug pads, mattresses, box springs, toys, dishwashers, washing machines, gas grills (tank removed), lawn mowers (oil/gas removed), bicycles, etc.

Unacceptable items: Do not put out

• Hazardous materials (oil-based paint, motor oil, pesticides, chemicals, etc.) We have one Household Hazardous Waste collection a year.
• Recyclable materials (Blue bin items)
• Demolition materials (ceramic tiles, asphalt shingles, sheetrock, insulation, concrete or stone).To dispose of these items, a $12 ticket/payment for 125 lbs., payments are made directly at theTrumbull Transfer Station.
• Garbage, clothes, fuels (gas, diesel, kerosene), logs with creosote, brush, leaves, smallelectronics. (Small electronics accepted free of charge at the Garder Road Landfill)
• Explosives, oil tanks, Propane & Oxygen tanks
• Items that are over six feet longItems must be separated in piles at the curb. Mixed piles and unacceptable items will absolutely not be picked up. It is the resident’s responsibility to dispose of all items left at the curb. Refrigerators and/or freezers must have doors and food removed. Lawn mowers must have oil and gas removed. Gas grills must have tanks removed. Sleeper sofas must be disassembled.
