Former Monroe police officer Michael Chacho sorely missed by all who knew him

Michael Robert Chacho, 69, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., passed away on May 13, 2020 after a long bout with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Tracy D. Williams; his brother Paul J. Chacho and his wife Sandra Salamon; his sister Kathleen M. Wyant and her husband Michael Wyant; his half-brother James Murphy Chacho; his stepmother Rosemary Murphy Chacho and 11 nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Baker Chacho; his father Paul John Chacho, Sr; and his half-sister Eileen Rose Chacho.

Michael was born June 25, 1950 in Monroe, Conn., and attended Monroe Elementary School. He graduated from Masuk High School, and worked at a bank in Bridgeport, Conn., for several years.

At his own expense, he then attended a nearby police academy to better his chances for a career in law enforcement. He was sworn in as an officer by the Monroe Police Department on March 3, 1975, where he worked until his health forced him into early retirement on June 30, 1995.

Also, during this period in his life, he served his country in the United States Army Reserve. Since then, he has lived in New Mexico, Colorado, Puerto Rico, and Florida, and was a volunteer at several hospitals in those states.

Cremation has occurred, and his remains were distributed at sea off the Florida coast in a private and very special sunset ceremony on May 23, 2020, the Saturday night of Memorial Day Weekend. The service was conducted by his former wife and dear friend, Lilia Pagan Chacho.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him, and may he rest in eternal peace.

  1. So sorry to hear of his passing, remember him from cross hill road home, I was class of 67, those old times before Monroe became bustling place to live, did not his dad drive a school bus, RIP among the rippling warm waters…

    • His dad did drive a school bus, in addition to being a milkman at Brock Hall Dairy. He moved to Albuquerque in 1970 where we married. He passed away in 2009. He and Mike are together again. Thanks for your sympathy.

      • Mike met my mother Susan and he moved her, my brother Sean, and I to Colorado with him when I was 4 years old. From then on out he raised my brother and I as if we were his own children even after my mother passed away when I was 17. He taught me everything I know about being strong. He taught me how to ride my bike and he taught me how to drive a car. I remember when he bought his grey mustang. It was shortly after I graduated high school and when I went outside with him to see it he threw me the keys and said “that a boy girl, let’s go for a ride” I was so scared to drive the brand new mustang but I did so anyways. We were driving down the highway to the Black Canyon in Montrose CO and he told me “I didn’t buy this car for you to go 40 miles an hour darlin, if you don’t hit at least 90 I’m just going to have to take it back” he said jokingly. And in that moment driving down the highway in the brand new mustang, going 87 miles an hour, blasting “Take it easy” by the Eagles, I had never felt more alive. Mike will always hold the biggest place in my heart. When I hear the word “father” I will always remember Mike, the man who gave my brother and I a life we would have never had without him. He was kind, he was funny, and the most caring man I have ever met in my 23 years of life. Thank you Mike for always believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. I will always miss you and I will always pause when there is a sunset and stare up at the sky and close my eyes and think of you. “Take it easy” I love you
