A liquor store is planned for the former Goodwill building on Route 111

The former Walter Stewart's Market building on Monroe Turnpike has been vacant since Goodwill moved out in 2016.

Plans are in the works to fill the vacant building that used to house the Goodwill store on Monroe Turnpike with the liquor store, 574 Wine and Spirits.

Prior to it being a Goodwill store, the building housed Walter Stewart’s Market, which operated from 1986 to 1995, before closing shortly after the Big Y World Class Market opened nearby.

Robert “Bailey” Stewart, the owner of the property, currently owns a Walter Stewart’s Market and Stewart’s Wine & Spirits in New Canaan.

The building at 574 Monroe Turnpike leased its space to the Goodwill store for 21 years, before the store moved out four years ago. The building has been vacant ever since.

The Monroe Planning and Zoning Commission approved a special exception permit for a site development plan on Nov. 7.

On Thursday, Zoning Enforcement Officer Joe Chapman said Stewart filed a “tenant fit up plan” with the Building Department.

  1. Liquor store?! Just what our town needs to bring shoppers. How about another pizza place or massage spa? What’s next, cask checking and bail bonds! Get it together town government. Trumbull and Newtown are so far ahead of us when it comes to business and growing the town properly.

Note: what are you doing about that abomination on the corner of Hattertown and Rt 59 across from the Rite Aid? Holes in the roof and siding. What an eyesore. I can point out 5 other buildings up and down Main Street that should also be demolished. Get on these owners and get a blight law.

  2. When does it open… more the merrier… competition means lower prices for the consumer…all good!
