MONROE, Conn. — A 22-year-old Monroe man was charged with DUI following a traffic stop on Fan Hill Road early in the morning on May 9.
At approximately 2:52 a.m., an officer observed a white Honda Accord cross over the double yellow center line on Monroe Turnpike before turning north on Elm Street at a high rate of speed, according to police. The officer caught up to the car in the 500-block of Elm Street, but the driver allegedly didn’t pull over right away, not stopping until he turned onto Fan Hill Road.
While speaking to driver, police said the officer noticed his eyes were bloodshot and glossy, his speech was slurred and a strong smell of Lysol was coming from inside the car.
After the driver complied with the officer’s request to step out of the vehicle, police said the officer could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him and the driver admitted to having one beer.
Field sobriety tests were not performed to standard, leading to the Monroe man’s arrest, police said, adding breath tests at headquarters later showed the driver’s blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
He was charged with DUI, traveling too fast for conditions and two counts of failure to drive in the proper lane, then released after posting seven percent of his $500 bond for a May 26 court date.

‘Forgot to stop’
A 63-year-old Bridgeport woman reportedly told officers she forgot to stop at the stop sign before crashing her black Toyota Corolla into the side of a white Jeep Grand Cherokee in the intersection of Cross Hill Road and Elm Street late Thursday afternoon.
She was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign, before being taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for chest pain. Police said the other driver, a 41-year-old Shelton man, did not report any injuries.
The accident occurred around 4:49 p.m. when police said the Bridgeport woman was heading north on Elm Street and the Shelton man was heading east on Cross Hill.
Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.
Toyota vs. Pole
A 68-year-old Derby man was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane Tuesday, after sideswiping a utility pole in the 400-block of Moose Hill Road, north of Cross Hill Road, in his 2020 Toyota Tacoma around 2:35 p.m.
He reportedly told police he was driving north when he looked down at paperwork, taking his eyes off the road, causing his vehicle to go off the right side of the road, striking the pole, according to the report.
Police said the driver was not injured, but his Toyota had to be towed due to disabling damage.
